Trick: Roll Over

Overview

Roll over is built one piece at a time: down, then head turn, then shoulder tip, then full roll. It's a masterclass in shaping — rewarding small approximations of a final behavior.

Why it matters

Learning to shape is a bigger skill than any single trick. Roll over is a great teacher.

Step by step

1. Start with the dog in a down.

2. Lure the head toward one shoulder with a treat. Reward.

3. Lure further so the shoulder tips. Reward.

4. Lure all the way over so the dog rolls onto their back and around. Reward.

5. Repeat until it flows in one motion.

6. Add the verbal cue "roll over" once the motion is smooth.

Common mistakes

• Trying to lure the full roll on day one.

• Rolling the dog physically — teach it, don't force it.

• Practicing on hard floors — use carpet or a mat.
