Overview

Mealtimes are 730 daily training opportunities. Use them. The dog earns dinner by being calm; you decide when the bowl hits the floor.

Why it matters

Frantic mealtimes bleed into frantic everything else. Calm mealtimes reinforce calm as a default.

Step by step

  1. Ask for a sit or down before you start prepping food.

  2. If the dog jumps, spins, or barks, freeze until they settle.

  3. Only lower the bowl when the dog is calm.

  4. If they lunge for the bowl before it hits the floor, lift it back up. Repeat until it can be placed with them sitting.

  5. Release them to eat with a clear cue ("okay").

  6. For counter-surfers: don't leave food unattended. Reward "four on the floor" while you cook.

Common mistakes

  • Feeding the dog while they're jumping or barking — you just rewarded that.

  • Free-feeding — you lose all the training value of meals.

  • Punishing food-related behaviors instead of teaching what to do instead.
