Leash & Walking Skills

Introducing the Collar, Harness & Leash

Overview

A puppy or new-to-you dog may find the collar itchy or the harness scary. Before any walks happen, pair the gear with food so it predicts good things. Skipping this step creates a dog who bolts when they see the leash — or refuses to move once it's on.

Why it matters

The gear should be neutral or exciting, never scary. Five minutes of prep saves months of struggle.

Step by step

  1. Show the collar/harness, feed a treat. Repeat 10 times.

  2. Touch it to the dog's neck or back, feed a treat.

  3. Slip it on for 5 seconds, feed treats the whole time, take it off.

  4. Slowly build up the time it's on, always paired with rewards.

  5. Clip on the leash indoors and let it drag for supervised minutes before walking.

  6. For head halters and no-pull harnesses, spend a full week on desensitization before use.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the gear on a scared dog — creates lifelong avoidance.

  • Using tools like prong collars, choke chains, or e-collars — modern guidelines strongly recommend against these.

  • Buying a harness that pinches or restricts the shoulders.

Practice this week

Do 3 short gear-desensitization sessions per day for a week.
