Teaching Down
Overview
Down is a naturally calming position for most dogs. It's the foundation for stays, for settling in public, and for the "place" behavior. Some dogs find it harder than sit — take your time.
Why it matters
A solid down means you can eat a meal, take a phone call, or sit in a cafe without your dog demanding attention.

Step by step
Start with the dog in a sit.
Hold a treat at the nose, then slowly lower it straight to the floor between their front paws.
If they follow, drag the treat slowly forward — elbows should hit the floor.
The instant the elbows touch, mark and treat on the floor.
After 5–10 reps, do the same motion with an empty hand and reward from the other.

Common mistakes
Pulling the treat away too fast — the dog stands up to follow.
Trying to physically push the dog down — never do this.
Adding the verbal cue before the motion is reliable.
Practice this week
10 downs a day for a week, in at least 3 different rooms.
