Gentle Handling & Body Desensitization
Overview
Adult dogs need to tolerate nail trims, ear cleaning, vet exams, teeth brushing, grooming, and being restrained. Puppies aren't born loving this — you have to build it, one gentle exposure at a time, always paired with rewards.
Why it matters
A dog who bites during nail trims wasn't born aggressive — they were never taught that hands near paws are safe.

Step by step
Start with the easiest touch (a shoulder or side).
Touch → mark → treat. Keep it brief.
Gradually work up to paws, ears, mouth, tail.
Introduce tools: brush touches fur → treat; clippers touch nail without cutting → treat.
Only progress when the current step is relaxed. Slow is fast here.

Common mistakes
Doing too much at once — one nail, not four paws.
Only handling the dog when something bad happens (bath, nail trim).
Ignoring stress signals to "just get it done."
