Getting Started

Setting Up for Training Success

Overview

Great training sessions are short, quiet, well-planned, and slightly boring — for the dog's brain that's just right. Start in a low-distraction room, keep rewards ready, and end before your dog gets tired.

Why it matters

Most training failures are environmental, not motivational. Fix the setup and half the problems disappear.

Step by step

  1. Pick a quiet room with few distractions for new skills.

  2. Wear a treat pouch so rewards are always within reach.

  3. Keep sessions short — 2 to 5 minutes, 3–5 times a day.

  4. End on a win, before your dog gets bored or frustrated.

  5. Only add distractions once the behavior is solid in the easy environment.

Common mistakes

  • Training for 30 minutes at a stretch — dogs learn best in short bursts.

  • Jumping to a hard environment (park, front yard) before the behavior is fluent.

  • Training a tired, hungry, or over-aroused dog.
